Healing through art: self exploration, creative play and K-Town Collectables Expo(s)

Due to a knee injury in the spring, there was a hiatus in collective art making and the trauma work in my community. The unexpected time to myself gave me time to explore myself as an artist as I was immobile for several weeks.

In completing year 1 of the Somatic Experience training, I had a new perspective of slowing down at a time where I had no choice but to slow down. So I took in the sunlight as it spilled gold across my skin; I took in the orchestra of bird songs who visited my yard; I took in yellows and purples of Goldenrod and asters; I took in the vibrations and warmth of my cat purrs.

And when the nervous system rested, I suddenly found so much room for creativity.

I spent time connecting with my ancestors, beading earrings made from beads gifted by the family of my late friend and I made beautiful bouquets made of cornhusk.

I painted my cats because I spent so much time with them and I was so grateful that they were gifts to my nervous system.

And then I was back to myself! Slowing down, support, holistic nourishment was all I needed to keep me afloat in my recovery.

I returned work and balanced the caseload with creation, which led me to participate in the K-Town Collectables expo in June and November.
